Getting adequate rest prior to an operation can decrease postoperative discomfort levels and help prevent chronic pain development following surgery. Sleep and pain demonstrate a well-documented reciprocal relationship in medical research. When sleep quality declines, the likelihood of developing new pain conditions or worsening existing pain increases, and conversely, pain can negatively affect sleep quality.
The statistics on post-surgical pain are significant: “Eighty percent of surgery patients experience moderate to severe pain immediately after undergoing an operation” with many still hurting at hospital discharge. Between ten to fifty percent develop chronic pain after their procedures.
Research indicates that disrupted sleep the night preceding surgery significantly worsens pain severity afterward. One study found that breast surgery patients with lower sleep efficiency experienced “significantly higher levels of postoperative pain in the weeks following the operation” compared to those without sleep disruptions. Sleep continuity (fewer interruptions) appears more impactful than total sleep duration on post-surgical pain levels.
The biological mechanisms remain partially unclear, though studies suggest adenosine neurotransmission may be involved in sleep-pain relationships. Researchers found that caffeine administration in sleep-deprived rats prevented increased pain sensitivity after surgical procedures.
